Adam, a handsome and successful investment banker leaves London on holiday with his friends. They stay at Adam’s family holiday home in Florida. Adam goes missing. He was last spotted in a bar. Adam’s brother Craig and his friend Ben, fly out to find him.
That is the plot, basically. The local police are unable to trace “The Missing Brit” (as the locals refer to him!) Or are they? Craig and Ben are eventually drawn into a dangerous cat-and-mouse game as they follow Adam’s trail and discover what happened to him that night.
Don’t be put off by the fact that the story moves slowly at the beginning. It quickly picks up speed once our protagonists are in Florida. The author paints a realistic picture of small town life in the region and there’s also plenty of observational humour among bored staff, the Americans not understanding British terms and expressions, friendly and not-so-friendly locals and so on.
There’s also the occasional sex scene, but the author seems to have kept them short and sweet so as not to distract the reader from the plot and the fast-paced story line.
I can imagine this story as a TV series. It has all the winning elements; the heroic male leads, the sultry seductress, the clever and not-so-clever villains, the police and one all-important missing victim.
The author taps on the common urges, interests and desires that drive some humans to act out of control. Among love, lust, jealousy and greed, there glimmers a hint of sibling love and one man’s journey to track down his brother (with the help of a colleague who becomes a good friend, along the way), risking his own life.
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book and couldn’t put it down once the plot started to thicken. The unexpected twists and turns trigger off the reader’s interest and one immediately flips over to the next chapter, eager to know what happens next.
In a casual and conversational tone, with urgency and tension in equal intervals, Philip Cox gives us a story that is worth every penny! If you like thrillers, suspense, mystery and crime, then this book is for you.
